Get out of the cold rain and learn about seasons in Mexico City!

Hola đź‘‹

Let’s continue our role-play conversation from earlier this week and delve deeper into the seasons in Mexico City! If you’re looking ahead to a chilly or rainy winter where you are, it may be the perfect time to brush up on your Spanish and visit someplace warmer!

Answers:

(1) “lloviendo” (raining)

The word "lloviendo" is the gerund form of the verb "llover," which means "to rain." In Spanish, gerunds are used to express actions that are currently happening, similar to the "-ing" ending in English. It describes a continuous action in the present, thus the construction "está lloviendo" translates to "is raining."

Another word that could have been used instead of "lloviendo" is "lluvioso," which is an adjective meaning "rainy." The sentence would then be restructured to say:

"No quiero visitar en temporada lluviosa" or "No quiero visitar cuando es lluvioso,"

which translates to "I don't want to visit in the rainy season" or "I don't want to visit when it's rainy."

(2) “escapar” (escape)

The use of "escapar" here emphasizes a strong desire to get away from an uncomfortable condition, which you may feel when eager to find a more pleasant environment.

Another, less urgent, way to express this would be to say that you want to “avoid” the cold weather. In this case, you could use the verb "evitar," which means "to avoid." The sentence would then be:

"Quiero evitar el frĂo de aquĂ."

This alternative maintains the same overall message but with a slight difference in nuance. "Evitar" suggests taking action to prevent the experience of the cold, without the added connotation of urgently getting away that "escapar" might imply.
